The primary production area of Hengshan Beiqi (Astragalus) is located on the semi-sunny and sunny slopes of the Hengshan mountain range in Hunyuan County, at an altitude of 1500~2000 meters. The soil here is loose, mostly meadow soil, mixed with a large amount of quartz sand, with a deep and loose soil layer rich in organic matter. The annual maximum temperature ranges from 25~28℃, while the minimum temperature can drop to -30~-35℃. The area enjoys 2800~3000 hours of sunshine annually. Due to the cold climate, the growth is slow, and it generally takes six to seven years before the astragalus can be harvested, processed, and utilized.

Hengshan Beiqi (Astragalus) is characterized by few branches, ample starchiness, a high proportion of parenchyma cells, and a high content of active ingredients. Thanks to its unique geographical and climatic conditions, the chemical quality of the active ingredients in Hengshan Northern Astragalus surpasses that of other astragalus varieties: the content of polysaccharides, astragaloside, and formononetin is higher than in other astragalus, and the content of trace elements such as calcium, manganese, zinc, and selenium in Hengshan Northern Astragalus is also superior to that found in other astragalus varieties.
